Five Commandments of Teaching with Technology

Let’s face it – technology has changed education. A couple of years back the very thought of “PC for education” was unheard of and now it’s a core essential for every teacher who wants to go from good to great.

Now the big question is how to simplify using technology in the classroom - here’s the lowdown:

Commandment #1: Master the Art of Research

This is undoubtedly the hardest to do, but once you ace it – there’s no stopping. First things first, bookmark the essentials such as Wikipedia and Google Scholar in your browser. Next, make it a daily practice to search the news section of your subject and topics of interest via Google News so you are aware of what’s happening on a real-time basis.

Commandment #2: Give Credit Wherever It’s Due

Imitation is the best form of flattery…

But not for academics!

Any information you take from an article, research paper or website, do make sure to hyperlink or cite the source to avoid any plagiarism issues.

Commandment #3: Backup your data, consistently

Whenever you make changes to files or add new files, you need to back up your files. It is a good practice to maintain a backup schedule so you never miss out. If you are working on a critical project, you may want to back it up even more often, even daily if needed.

Commandment #4: Keep in Mind Email Etiquette

It may sound basic but the way to put across your communications speaks volumes. For example, emails that are long and deviate from the subject line serve no purpose. Always, be to the point and keep in mind to mention you’re sending attachments which are named properly.

Commandment #5: Follow the dos and don’ts of Social media

Dos

Control your privacy settings

Disconnect from negativity

Use the right content on the right network

Separate Business and Personal Account

Complete and Update Your Social Media Profiles

Don’ts

Don’t over post

DON’T CREATE POSTS IN ALL CAPS

For a teacher to excel in their career, up-skilling is pivotal. This will not only help you but also engage students to learn more and more.
