Innovation quite simply put, is a problem solved with a big idea.
It can be something as small as having a separate wet and dry dustbin for the classrooms, canteen and play area in school or as transformative as students bringing their own PC to school every day to learn!
February 16th being Innovation Day, is all about imagining new, better ways of doing things. So how are you going to be innovative today? How about organising a memorable and educational day for your students with this step by step guide.
Step 1 - Identify a Problem
First things first, identify a problem that is solvable and unique to your school. Keep in mind the age of your students and their access to resources. If you like, you can even let your students pick their own problem to solve.
Step 2 - Create Teams
To help your students build their social skills and learn to effectively collaborative, create teams of students who don't know each other with different skills and strengths using the online team generator Keamk.
Step 3 - Provide the Right Tools
Give each student team a PC, access to wifi, essential stationery supplies and an entire afternoon to come up with a solution for the problem that either you identified or your students have. Be there for your students when they have questions but let them come up with the final solution on their own, enabling them to fine-tune their research and problem-solving capabilities.
Step 4 - Make the Presentation Round Fancier than Usual
Have the presentation round at the end of the day with an element of celebration including gratification so students feel rewarded (and motivated) for their hard work. The gratification can be anything ranging from an hour of gaming after school in the computer lab to an all paid-for field trip.
Learning and innovation go hand in hand, not only will your students have a lot of fun because the day will be different and more entertaining than a usual school day but will also begin to take small steps in discovering a passion that could be their future career!
PS: If organising an entire day proves to be a little difficult, turn the last period into Innovation Hour.
